The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) welcomed aboard singer-songwriter David Cook for a Navy Entertainment sponsored meet-and-greet and concert in the ship’s hangar bay May 25.

Cook rose to fame after winning the seventh season of the hit reality television show American Idol, and in 2008 he won Nashville Music Awards’ Song of the Year for his single, “Time of My Life.”

“I was super excited when I found out David Cook was coming to [TR],” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (fuel) Airman Debra Hoover of Pleasant Hill, Missouri. “My whole hometown cheered him on when he was on ‘Idol,’ because he grew up 20 minutes away. I’ve always loved ‘Time of My Life!’”

Sailors and Marines packed the hangar bay for the show, which Cook kicked off with “Paper Heart.”

“I love you guys so much and here’s why,” said Cook. “You guys scream in unison. I’ve never seen that before. We’re here to show you a good time!”

Operations Specialist 2nd Class Sarah Fowler showed her enthusiasm in a note that she passed to Cook.

“What is this?” Cook asked as he picked up the piece of paper from the stage. “’Sarah loves David,’ Wow! So if everyone sends me these you all get to come on stage, right?”

Cook and his band played some of his original songs along with covering country and classic rock hit songs set to the sounds of night flight operations.

“So this is a show on an aircraft carrier,” said Cook. “I’ve never played a song and had a plane fly by. That’s exactly what that song was missing.”

Following the performance, Sailors lined up to meet the band and snap some selfies.

“It was awesome,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (fuel) Airman Jesse Purdy, “I had a lot of fun dancing with my friends.”

Marine Sgt. Michael Kelly, attached to the Thunderbolts of Marine Strike Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 251, echoed Purdy’s sentiments.

“He was really energetic,” said Kelly. “It was nice to get a break from the day-to-day and to hear that people are grateful for what we do out here.”

Cook offered some words of encouragement to the crew.

“You all are doing a fantastic job serving our country and supporting the people that need help in this part of the world,” Cook said. “Thank you, TR!”

Cook and company also joined Sailors aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Normandy (CG 60), May 26.

“It was great to have David Cook on board today,” said Boatswain’s Mate 3rd Class Stephen Jones. “He is a great artist and has really inspiring lyrics. I was really excited to see him come out here because I am a big fan. I listen to a lot of his music.”

Cook and his guitarist, Daniel Damico, joined the Normandy crew to perform an acoustic set on the mess decks following a special tour.

“It was an exciting experience,” said Cook. “The captain and crew were phenomenal and the hospitality was great. I got to drive the ship and that was something different. I couldn’t thank them enough for the time spent on board.”

Theodore Roosevelt is the flagship of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG), which is composed of Carrier Strike Group 12, Carrier Air Wing 1, Destroyer Squadron 2 staff, the guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) and the guided-missile destroyers USS Winston S.
